KULALA DESERT LODGE

Location

  • Kulala is 350km south of Windhoek and can be easily reached by sedan car, although a 4x4 is recommended.
  • The entrance is situated 19km south of Sesriem on the road D826 (follow the signpost with arrows on the C19).
Child Policy

Children of all ages are welcome.

Accommodation
  • 11 x “kulalas” each with twin beds (and there are 2 extra beds available for children/triples)
  • 2 x double “kulalas”
  • 2 x family rooms – accommodates four guests
  • 4 tour leaders/guides can be accommodated in rondavels (not the same standard as a guest unit)

Accommodation Amenities:

  • Each “kulala” is especially adapted to the unique desert conditions, built on a platform to ensure maximum airflow; a thatch roof provides a cool respite from the sun
  • Ceiling fans ensure a breeze at all times
  • En-suite with shower, flush toilet and hand basin.
  • Each room has a veranda with view of the dunes
  • A private rooftop area on top of the bathroom gives guests the opportunity of spending a night under the magnificent night sky for which luxury bedrolls are available any time
  • Safe in each chalet

Camp Description & Recreational Facilities

  • The thatch roof main lodge has been built entirely of clay bricks in an African desert style
  • Reception, lounge, pub, dining room and veranda
  • There is a swimming pool with shaded area if guests want to relax during the heat of the day.

Game Viewing

A waterhole in front of the main building gives the opportunity to see oryx, springbok, bat- eared fox, aardwolf, ostrich and jackals. Spotted hyenas can be heard at night.

Activities

Activities will be at an additional cost if guests are not booked on the Fully Inclusive rate.

  • Nature drives into the desert in 3 x 9 seater and 2 x 8 seater vehicles
  • Walking trails, including the Tsauchab River Trail
  • Visit to Sossusvlei and Sesriem
  • Balloon safaris (extra even if guests are on Fully Inclusive rate. Closed 15 January to 15 February)
  • Horse riding safari (on request and at an extra cost)
  • The scenic sundowner tour is one of the best scenic safaris in the Namib.
  • Private vehicles can be booked at an additional cost, subject to availability.

Suggested Activity Schedule

Day 1 – Arrival.

15h45 - Depart on afternoon activity (Sundowner / Sesriem) / guided walking trail.

19h00 - Dinner at the lodge.

Day 2

05h00 - Wake up.

05h30 - Light breakfast is served.

05h45 - Depart on Sossusvlei excursion.

Full buffet brunch is served on the dunes (only with guided trips, picnic lunch can be purchased at the camp at additional cost for self-drivers).

14h00 - Return to Lodge.

16h00 - Depart on afternoon activity (Sundowner / Sesriem) / guided walking trail.

19h00 - Dinner at the lodge.

Day 3 – Departure.

05h00 - Wake up if ballooning.

05h30 - Light breakfast before departure for ballooning.

07h00 – Or wake up (depending on departure time).

08h00 – Hot breakfast.

Electricity & Water
  • 220v power available in each kulala 24 hours a day.
  • Video battery recharging facilities available please bring spare battery and adapters.
  • Drinking water is supplied.
Drinks Policy

Local drinks and house-wines are included but premium imports are not.

Laundry Policy

A daily laundry service is included in the nightly tariff if on a Fully Inclusive basis otherwise an extra cost applies.

Payment can be affected by: Travellers’ cheques, cash or Visa/MasterCard.

Gratuity

The following is the suggested gratuity schedule only and is subject to service standards:

  • NAD100 per guest per day. This will be divided up amongst the camp staff.
  • Guides should be tipped separately.
Interesting facts about the lodge/ what makes it special

Magnificent views of the famous red sand dunes of Sossusvlei, breathtaking mountain scenery and vast open plains - Kulala Desert Lodge has these in bulk. Situated on 21 000 hectares of a private wilderness area bordering the Namib Naukluft Park, there is an abundance of space and silence found here.

Guests are collected from the Airstrip and transfered to the lodge by game drive vehicle.

Luggage

In Botswana there is a 20kg luggage restriction per person for any charter transfers. Please note that the cargo pods on a normal light aircraft cannot handle suitcases and hard bags, so luggage must be packed in soft bags.
